Atypography: "SPLENDOR"

"SPLENDOR"

"Typography and abstraction have come to an agreement."

From the Atypography user manual:

The letter "A" in "Atypography/Atype" doesn't stand for "anti" or "abstract," but instead, it signifies "without" or "not."

"Atypography is an art movement that graphically represents traditional writing systems in an unconventional way, creating an authentic design that remains readable while concealing text signs at first glance. It defies conventional typography rules with non-standard fonts, experimental layouts, and innovative techniques, offering a distinctive and unique visual identity that challenges norms."

I found this movement intriguing, despite my love for typography itself. Working with abstraction allows the soul to feel; to perceive life in a new dimension.

I couldn't help but explore this concept.

Every Sunday, I find myself painting. I observe a fairly strict Sabbath—a time to rest and prepare for the week ahead. Lately, I’ve been reclaiming thrifted paintings that were destined to be forgotten, giving them new life with fresh layers of paint.

There’s something sacred about painting over an old canvas. A thrifted piece, a discarded, layered with time and mystery. Someone else’s brushstrokes, their vision—now the foundation for something new.

This painting began with a bold, deep blue—covering the past but not erasing it. Beneath it, traces of the old painting remain, faint but present.

Then came the form—an abstract, cryptic shape. It doesn’t explain itself. It doesn’t need to. But hidden within its lines is a single word: SPLENDOR.

Psalm 104:1 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty.”

This piece is a meditation on that splendor—on glory that can’t be contained in a single brushstroke. A reminder that, just like this painting, our lives are built on layers. What was before shapes what is now. And sometimes, the greatest beauty comes when something old is transformed into something new.

Below was my process.
